When the death of a New York print shop owner is ruled a suicide, newspaper reporter Charlie Riggs is convinced otherwise and sets out to prove that it was murder. He accuses an extremist group of the crime and the Assistant D.A. (Franchot Tone) steps in to investigate.

In real-life, Franchot Tone had a rocky marriage to actress Jean Wallace (the nightclub singer). Actress Doe Avedon was married to the accomplished fashion photographer Richard Avedon. The 1957 movie Funny Face is based on their story and Audrey Hepburn stars as "Jo", whose character is based on "Doe".
